President's Message

Peter Temple portraitWe've entered a new era - both in terms of the economy and the business of speaking.

It's becoming clear that the economy is going through a major, long-term correction. At the same time, we’re hearing clients stressing value and content over entertainment. The "old ways of business" don't necessarily work the way they used to. Technology is everywhere we look and to be successful today, we need to know how to use it! Our industry is changing indeed.

But with challenges and change comes opportunity. Uncertainly breeds the need for experts of all types. If you’re positioned well in your marketing and advertising, have content that is needed, and have exceptional onstage skills that lead to repeat business, you’ll do well in this new environment.

Which leads to our focus for the year – a Focus on Value – our theme for 2010.

Focus on Value Theme

The value part of the equation is in what we (as a board) provide to our membership and in ensuring that we all have the tools to provide the value our clients demand. The camera lens represents the need for all of us to master our technology - the tools we use on stage, the new social media and the growing power of television on the web. Providing this support for members is my personal focus this year.

As your 2010 Calgary Chapter president, I hope to bring my 30 years as a television and convention producer and successful entrepreneur to lead CAPS Calgary in a way that will leave it stronger and more vibrant than when I assumed office. Let me tell you, that’s going to be a challenge - because this is a chapter that has never been stronger: our members are extremely active and supportive throughout the year, our programming has a well-deserved reputation as being spectacular, and our board is experienced and dedicated to providing the highest value to both members and guests.

But we’re always looking for more volunteers! It’s the fastest way to get “plugged-in” to the community. Serving on the board will reward you in so many ways, one of which is to connect you to successful speakers not only across the country, but around the world.

We also have arguably the most experienced speakers in the country as part of our Calgary chapter. They’re very active and a terrific source of information on all aspects of the business of speaking. Becoming a member gives you direct access to this wealth of information – something that is truly priceless.

If you're looking for more information on becoming a member, drop by our National website, or drop me an email at the address below. I’d be happy to get back to you directly or steer you in the right direction, should I not have the answers you need.

We have an exciting year ahead. Join us. I can personally assure you that you'll receive exceptional value. I’m staking my year on it!

Throughout the year I invite your feedback, ideas, and input. Please contact me at peter@petertemple.com or approach me at meetings.

2010 Chapter Board

It truly takes a village to keep our chapter functioning at such a high level, and I’m very proud to say that I have a great board to work with this year.  However, we are always looking for committee volunteers to help lessen the workload. You'll really feel a part of the CAPS group if you embrace the spirit of CAPS by volunteering - even for the smallest of tasks.  Below are the people will truly be grateful for your help, and you will have a direct hand in strengthening your chapter.
